Awurudu is the Sinhala term used to describe the year. This
marks the dawn of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Sri Lankans celebrate this season after the cropping paddy. Sinhalese and Tamils in Sri
Lanka celebrate this New Year according to their religious and astrological believes.
Preparing food, starting work and dining in the New Year are done at a special
time. This season is famous for the special variety of food and the games played.
Sri Lankans prepare the following foods during this season.
1.
Kiribath –Rice cooked with coconut milk (cream).
2.
Kokis-A fried food made out of rice flour.
3.
Kavum (oil cake)-A deep fried sweet.
4.
Undu wal – It is a ring made out of flour and
infused with treacle.
5.
Dodol- A sweet made out of flour, treacle and
coconut milk.
